We celebrated this year Total Defence Day on 12th of February, before the Gong Xi-Deepa-Raya concert. This was the second year I celebrated Total Defence Day in Singapore. I realised that total defence is a main issue and it is necessary. Total defence comprises five defences, which are psychological defence, social defence, civil defence, economic defence and military defence. Each of them played an important part in defending Singapore.
On Friday morning, the first activity was to read the memoirs of Singapore's Mentor Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He talked about the time when Japanese conquered Singapore and how they tortured the local. The Japanese were cruel and ferocious in forcing people to follow their rules. They wanted the complete authorities to rule Singapore, which had resulted the difficulties of Singaporean's life at that period of time. Many Singaporeans were killed or being tortured to death. After reading the passage, I began to realise the importance of total defence. Total defence is important in protecting our nation. We need to have the spirit of total defence so as to defend Singapore from enemy attacks.
We were also being instructed to visit the Total Defence trail which was presented by the uniform groups, including NCC, NPCC and Red Cross. They had demonstrated what part did they played in defending Singapore. I had gained a lot of knowledge through the trail.
We had the food rationing exercise before the end of the event. Each of us was given a bun with a bottle of mineral water. The purpose of this exercise was to let us have an idea of what difficulty we will be facing when there is a natural disaster or war. This was to prepare us for the awareness when we encounter problems.
Total defence was important in maintaining Singapore's security and also uniting people to defend Singapore.
